In this day and age, parents and teachers come across loads of children who say that they hate math or are terrible at the subject. Almost all the other subjects take a storytelling approach that creates the space for a child to get into the topic with their own perspective and imagination. Math typically doesn’t take such an approach. Just studying formulas, theorems, and complex mathematical processes takes away from the immense learning potential it has because children don’t understand the “why.”
As a parent to a child who is struggling to make the relation, you can take matters into your own hands and work with them to help create that relation. There is no shortage of opportunities for you to show your children how all the numbers and formulas they learn can relate to everyday life. From something as simple as adding up the numbers of cans in the pantry to something more complex like working out how long it might take to drive to their friends’ house based on how fast you’re going, the opportunities are endless.
It becomes far easier for children to dismiss math as boring or irrelevant if they can appreciate the practical application of mathematical concepts in their lives. To really make it sink in, you could consider using examples that relate to things your children are interested in.
For instance, if they love soccer, you can work with them to work out statistics, like how many games their favourite team needs to win to become champions. If they are passionate about baking, use the art of baking a cake to explore mathematical concepts, like measuring, weighing, and calculating the cooking times. Working with children to explore fun kids’ mathematics activities that help them develop a strong foundation in understanding math can make matters even better.
Just because your child does not show any interest in math right now doesn’t mean that they will always feel the same way about the subject. As a parent, you can take on the task of helping them learn and understand math better besides their school environment. Children love it when their parents become involved and help them study.
